50 Years Ago… the
smoothest slice of soul in town was “I'll Be Around” by The Spinners, a bunch
of middle-aged ex-doo-woppers with slick threads and even slicker moves, who
had just started working with Thom Bell to get a little of that Philly Soul
magic. And it worked!
“I’ll Be Around” starts off sounding supportive – a reassurance that you’ll always be friends at the end of a relationship - & that’s mostly how it’s remembered. But then things get a little creepy & stalky – “I’ll never leave you alone” – and then very quickly, things get dark: “I'll be standing in a coffin, I'll be a-rippin' it up.”
