60 Years Ago… the aliens landed and they formed a rock’n’roll band. They called themselves The Tornados. They didn’t really know what they were doing but they knew how to make a hit record!
That is genuinely the only possible explanation for “Telstar”, the weirdest worldwide hit of the pre-Beatles era!
The early-60s was an era obsessed with space & aliens. I think we truly believed that once we landed on the moon we’d be welcomed by hot alien waitresses serving us cocktails. It was an era where a record that looked like this could become a hit record!
More sensibly perhaps, “Telstar” was the sum of both the space-age-pop/exotica music & instrumental surf rock. Two of the most way-out sounds of the era, mixed together in a laboratory… the hypothesis that this is the grooviest music of the era is… positive!
